Badminton Finals This Week

The LKSSAA South badminton finals were held last week at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham with the top 6 advancing to this weeks LKSSAA championships facing top finishers from Lambton.

In the Junior finals, Ryan Baker of JMSS won the boys single crown, defeating Brandon Hunter of ESPC. Olivia Hunter of ESPC won the girls single crown, beating Camille Blain of CKSS.

CKSS’ Jessie McPherson and Kirby McKinnon won the girls double title, beating Reese Parks and Kate Balkwill of JMSS. Mathieu Gaudrault and Hunter Henderson of ESPC took the boys double title, winning over schoolmates Aidan Lachine and Ryen Stevens.

Finally in the mixed double, Rachel Carleton and Jake Reid of JMSS defeated Bailey Rolph and Courtney Legere of ESPC.

The Junior finals will take place Thursday.

The Senior championships are Tuesday.

Rayne Kellier Commits To Windsor

Chatham’s Rayne Kellier has committed to compete with the University of Windsor Lancers track and field team.

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School student is a jumper, with the most success coming for Kellier in high jump.

Kellier has also played curling, basketball, soccer, and hockey for CKSS.

Last year, Kellier finished second at LKSSAA in high jump, clearing 1.55m. She was also second at SWOSSAA, jumping 1.57m. Kellier ended her year finishing 6th at OFSAA West Regionals, jumping 1.60m.

Kellier recently won the Windsor Lancers prep meet jumping 1.55m.

Rayne Kellier’s brother, Josh Kellier is a runner for the University of Guelph track and field team. Her other brother Cai Kellier, jumps for the University of Windsor.

Day 1 Of LKSSAA Track and Field In The Books

urin beat a pair of schoolmates, winning with a time of 1:00.26. CKSS’ Kirsten VanGoethem (1:02.16) and Chloe Pugh (1:02.99) were second and third respectively.

Other Junior girls winners were Alison Stephens of CKSS, who threw 32.68 in the discuss event. CKSS’ Marandee Hunter was third throwing 26.72m.

Emma Nicholson of UCC was third in the Junior girls triple jump, with a distance of 9.96m.

At the senior girls level, UCC’s Reece Cowan and CKSS’ Delainey Johnson finished second and third in the 1500m steeplechase with times of 5:57.61 and 5:58.85 respectively.

Wallaceburg’s Amy Nap won the senior girls 100m hurdles, while Ally Oulds of CKSS won the senior girls 400m dash. CKSS’ Rayne Kellier cleared 1.49m in the senior girls high jump, while teammate Mattea Deleary finished second jumping 1.46m. CKSS’ Hannah St. Pierre won the 100m dash running 13.63s.

Finally in senior girls javelin, CKSS’ Jana Kucera finished second throwing 37.97m, while Ridgetown’s Kealy Taylor-Noah was third throwing 35.91m.

In Midget girls, Kirby MacKinnon of CKSS jumped 4.79m to win the long jump.

UCC’s Abby Piatkowski threw 9.61m to win the midget girls shot put, being closely followed by Blenheim’s Kristyn Kistulinec who finished second, throwing 9.43m.

CKSS’ Camille Blain won the midget girls 80m hurdles, crossing in just over 13 seconds, defeating fellow CKSS athlete Sophie Maine who was second.

In the 100m dash, CKSS’ Madeline Douma finished second running 13.69s.

In the 1500m run, CKSS teammates Niveen Tekhli and Anna Trinca battled it out the entire way, with Tekhli winning with a time of 5:24.97, while Trinca crossed in 5:25.14.

On the boys side, UCC’s Tate Bowden finished third in the midget boys shot put event, throwing 11.28m, while JMSS’ Maciah Buchanan was the top finisher, taking third in the 100m dash.

CKSS’ Lars MacDonald won the Junior boys triple jump, leaping 12.15m. Sam Haight of CKSS threw 39.12m to finish second in Junior boys discuss, while Chatham Christian’s Daniel Burggraaf was third throwing 37.01m.

Wallaceburg’s Camden Fischer won the junior boys shot put.

UCC’s Jonathan Cartier won the Junior boys 100m dash, while ESPC’s Aidan Lachine was the top finisher in the Junior boys 400m dash, finishing third with a time of 55.69s.

In senior boys, CKSS’ James Muharrem won the 110m hurdles, crossing in 14.84s, while CKSS’ Thador Tekhli crushed his competition in the 2000m steeplechase, finishing in 6:23.46, more than 17 seconds ahead of CKSS’ Austin McQuiggan who was second.

CKSS’ Ian Cameron was second in the senior boys javelin, while CKSS’ Curtis Godfrey was second in the 400m dash.

Other results were not available at the time of publishing. Full results will be listed tomorrow.

LKSSAA Track And Field Wraps Up

The 2017 LKSSAA track and field championships came to an end Wednesday at Chatham-Kent Secondary School with close to 600 athletes from across Chatham-Kent and Lambton County competing.

At the senior girls level, Ally Oulds of CKSS was named athlete of the meet, and won the individual title. She won the 200m dash, 400m hurdles, and 400m dash, as well as helping CKSS win two relay events. Her CKSS senior girls also took the team title.

CKSS’ Payton Sabourin won the Junior girls title, winning the 100m, 200m, 400m, and two relays.

At the Midget Girls level, CKSS’ Camille Blain won the overall crown, and her CKSS team won the team title. She won the 80m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 200m dash, and was part of CKSS’ winning 4 x 100m relay.

Pain Court’s Aidan Lachine won the Junior Boys division.

The top eight finishers from each division will compete next week at the SWOSSAA championships, which begin Wednesday at CKSS, and finish Thursday at the University of Windsor.

Locals Looking To Qualify, SWOSSAA Opens Today

The SWOSSAA track and field championships open today in Chatham, with a large contingent of Chatham-Kent athletes entering the event with hopes of qualifying for the OFSAA West Regionals.

In the midget girls division, CKSS’ Camille Blain was the midget girls LKSSAA track and field champion, winning each of her events including the 80m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and 200m dash, as well as the 4x100m relay.

Other midget girls athletes who won their LKSSAA events include CKSS’ Niveen Tekhli (1500m), Anna Trinca (3000m), Emily Burd (Javelin), Kirby MacKinnon (Long Jump), and UCC’s Abby Piatkowski (Shot Put).

At the Junior Girls level, CKSS’ Payton Sabourin looks to continue her dominance. She won the 100m, 200m, and 400m events, as well as the overall Junior girls crown at LKSSAA. She also helped her relay teams win the 4x100m and 4x400m events.

Alison Stephens of CKSS won both the Discus and Shot Put, while fellow CKSS athlete Marandee Hunter enters SWOSSAA as the LKSSAA Javelin champion. CKSS’ Kristen VanGoethem (300m Hurdles) and UCC’s Emma Nicholson (High Jump) also won their events at LKSSAA.

Senior girls champion, and female athlete of the meet Ally Oulds of CKSS will have her eye on OFSAA, entering as the LKSSAA champion in the 200m, 400m, and 400m hurdles, as well as part of CKSS’ relay teams.

Other LKSSAA champions from Chatham-Kent at the senior girls level include CKSS’ Hannah St. Pierre (100m), Rayne Kellier (High Jump), and Mattea Deleary (Long Jump), as well as Chatham Christian’s Carolyn Prins (Triple Jump), and Wallaceburg’s Amy Nap (100m Hurdles).

On the boys side, no Chatham-Kent athletes won a midget boys division.

At the Junior Boys level, Aidan Lachine of ESPC enters SWOSSAA after winning the 800m and 300m hurdles. UCC’s Jonathan Cartier was the 100m champion, Wallaceburg’s Camden Fischer won the Shot Put, and CKSS’ Lars MacDonald (Triple Jump) and Drew Koluk (Long Jump) also enter as local champions.

Finally in Senior Boys, Thador Tekhli won the 800m and 2000m steeplechase, James Muharrem captured the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, while Desmond Lambkin (Triple Jump), and John McGregor’s Anthony Atkinson (Discus) also won their events.

The opening day of SWOSSAA track and field wrapped up with close to three dozen local athletes qualifying for OFSAA West Regionals next week in London. Several records were broken Wednesday, but with the windy conditions, the fast times on the track will not be officially recognized in the record books. SWOSSAA will continue tomorrow in Windsor.

James Muharrem of CKSS highlighted the day with a 110m hurdles record that did stand despite the wind.

CKSS Athletes Dominate Day Two At SWOSSAA

Chatham-Kent Secondary School athletes won their share of events at day two of the SWOSSAA track and field championships in Windsor on Thursday.

Camille Blain completed her sweep of Midget girls events, winning on Wednesday in the 80m hurdles, and following it up Thursday with wins in the 300m hurdles and 200m dash. James Muharrem, Ally Oulds, and Payton Sabourin also added to their wins. CKSS’ Emily Burd and Marandee Hunter also won events, while UCC’s Bailey Spence was the lone other Chatham-Kent athlete to win an event.

Below are finishers who placed in the top five, qualifying for next week’s OFSAA West Regionals in London.

OFSAA Bound Athletes After Day One At Regionals

A dozen local athletes qualified for OFSAA at day one of the OFSAA West Regionals track and field meet being held at Western University in London.

CKSS’ Alison Stephens was the lone athlete to win an event on day one, throwing a personal best 34.64m in the Junior girls discus event. Her throw was more than 2m better than the second place competitor. She also qualified as part of CKSS’ Junior girls 4x100m relay team, which finished fourth, alongside teammates Chloe Pugh, Kristen VanGoethem, and Payton Sabourin.

Payton Sabourin qualified in two events, the 4x100m relay, as well as the 400m dash. Sabourin finished second in the 400m dash, breaking the minute mark with a time of 59.30s.

CKSS’ Camille Blain and Ally Oulds continued their strong performances from SWOSSAA, both finishing third in their events to qualify. Oulds ran the 400m in 57.61, while Blain crossed the finish line in the 80m hurdles in 12.60.

Twins Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera made OFSAA in the senior girls javelin, finishing third and fourth respectively. Jana Kucera threw 37.48m, while Logan Kucera threw a distance of 36.71m.

Other local athlete qualifying included Kristyn Kistulinec of Blenheim (midget girls shot put, 10.78m), Rayne Kellier of CKSS (senior girls high jump, 1.56m), Curtis Godfrey of CKSS (senior boys 400m, 50.36s), and Carolyn Prins of Chatham Christian (senior girls triple jump, 11.46m).

Day two continues Saturday with the top four in each category advancing to OFSAA.

OFSAA West Regionals, Day Two Qualifies More

Another group of Chatham-Kent Secondary School athletes qualified for the OFSAA track and field championships from the West Regionals this weekend in London.

While athletes from other local schools competed, it was all CKSS on day two at Regionals.

Ally Oulds crossed the line in 1:02.30 to be the only local winner on day two, capturing the senior girls 400m hurdles crown.

CKSS’ Camille Blain finished second in two events, qualifying for OFSAA in all three of her events. Saturday she was second in the Midget girls 300m hurdles (47.32s) and Midget girls 200m dash (25.67s).

Payton Sabourin continued her strong showing at OFSAA West Regionals crossing the line third in the Junior girls 200m dash running 26.51s.

Senior boys athlete James Muharrem qualified again, this time in the 400m hurdles (56.35s), while Junior girl Marandee Hunter threw 32.42m to finish fourth in the Junior girls javelin.

Several of these athletes also helped relay teams qualify. Sabourin and Oulds teamed up with Chloe Pugh and Kirsten VanGoethem to finish fourth in the Open Girls 4x400m relay, running 4:00.06.

Muharrem, and fellow OFSAA qualifier Curtis Godfrey were two parts of the Open Boys 4x400m relay team which qualified, finishing fourth. Tye Douma and Thador Tekhli were the other CKSS runners, finishing in 3:28.08.

OFSAA track and field runs from Thursday to Saturday this week in Belleville, Ontario.

Alison Stephens Wins OFSAA Gold

Chatham’s Alison Stephens will be bringing an OFSAA gold medal back to her hometown and school next week, after winning gold on day two of the 2017 OFSAA track and field championships.

Stephens, a grade 10 student at Chatham-Kent Secondary School won gold in the Junior girls discus, smashing her own personal best, throwing 37.25m.

“This is the proudest moment of my life,” said Stephens following her throw.

The distance, which beat the silver medallist by more than 3 metres, even surprised Stephens herself, as she entered OFSAA having won OFSAA West Regionals with a throw of 34.64m.

“I just can’t believe it. I’ve wanted to throw 35m all year, and to come out and throw 37m is unbelievable,” she added.

Stephens was the first Chatham-Kent athlete to medal at the 2017 OFSAA championships, although several athletes are into the finals following preliminary events and heats.

Yesterday, Stephens qualified for another final as part of CKSS Junior girls 4x100m relay team.

Ally Oulds Wins OFSAA Gold, Blain Takes Silver

Ally Oulds was the fastest on the track in the 400m hurdles from the first day of the season, to the last.

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School grade 12 student dominated every meet she competed in, including the OFSAA track and field championships in Belleville where she won OFSAA gold Saturday.

Oulds crossed the finish line in the senior girls race in 1:01.82, close to a second ahead of the next finisher.

It was an improvement from her 1:02.30 time that made her one of only two Chatham-Kent winner at OFSAA West Regionals last week in London.

ng a school record with a time of 12.09s in the Midget Girls 80m hurdles to win silver.

She also finished fourth on Saturday in the 300m hurdles event, narrowly missing her second medal.

CKSS Hands Out Athletic Awards

Chatham-Kent Secondary School handed out their annual athletic awards Tuesday night in a ceremony held at the Ed Myers Gymnasium in CKSS.

Winning the senior awards on the evening were Male Athlete of the Year, James Muharrem, and Female Athlete of the Year, Brooke MacKinnon.

Earning the Mark Lindeman Most Sportsmanlike award was Sydney Sabourin and Austin McQuiggan.

The Greg Way Most Dedicated award went to Ally Oulds and Thador Tekhli.

Winning the Joe Garcia Award for excellence in basketball and soccer was Reagan Kellier.

At the Junior and Midget ranks, Drew Koluk was Junior Male Athlete of the Year, while Payton Sabourin was Junior Female Athlete of Year. Rookie Male Athlete of the Year was Adrian Stubberfield, while Rookie Female Athlete of the Year was shared by Camille Blain and Kirby MacKinnon.

Inducted into the James Dean Hall of Fame were CKSS alumnus Christian Bechard (University of Guelph) and Lee Kucera (Dalhousie University).

The school also awarded other memorial awards including the Brandon Markham Cross Country Award to Chase Squire-George, and the Jon McCubbin Memorial award to Jacob Dodman.

Brooke MacKinnon and Anthony Atkinson are the 2017 recipients of the Dr. Jack Parry Award, as Chatham-Kent’s top high school student-athletes.

Brooke MacKinnon, a Chatham-Kent Secondary School student, earned an NCAA Division I scholarship to play golf next year at the University of Hartford.

An accomplished athlete in several sports including golf, soccer, badminton, volleyball, and basketball, MacKinnon was also an active volunteer in her school, and was CKSS’ Female Athlete of the Year, and Top Academic Athlete.

Anthony Atkinson, a graduating John McGregor Secondary School student, will compete in track and field next season for the University of Windsor. Atkinson, a thrower, has an OFSAA silver medal on his resume in shot put, and also competed in basketball and volleyball for JMSS.

Both student-athletes had above 90% academic averages.

This marks the third straight year a John McGregor Secondary School student has won the Jack Parry, with Kelton Evans and Ashley Jackson sweeping last year, and Bridget Carleton winning the female award the year prior.

MacKinnon is the first female winner from Chatham-Kent Secondary School since Kailey Houston won the award in 2011. CKSS’ Lee Kucera won the male award in 2015.

Chatham Sports Hall of Fame Names Bursary Winners

For the fourteenth consecutive year, the Chatham Sports Hall of Fame presented a bursary to a graduating student in each of Chatham’s four secondary schools.

The winner was a person who had contributed significantly to the betterment of athletics in his/her own school in a non-playing capacity. The award recognizes a student who has given his/her time unselfishly performing one or more of the following tasks – coaching, managing, scoring, timing, fundraising, or serving with the athletic society to improve the school’s athletic program.

The winners of the 2017 Chatham Sports Hall of Fame Bursaries are:

  • Victoria Koomans – Chatham Christian High School
  • Emily Saunders – Chatham-Kent Secondary School
  • Camryn Dudley – John McGregor Secondary School
  • Grace Hiltz – Ursuline College Chatham

The awards, including a certificate and a $200.00 bursary, were presented to each of the students at the recent awards or athletic ceremonies at the schools. The Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame congratulates all the winners as chosen by their respective schools and wishes them well in their future endeavours.

Hawks Senior Girls Open Season With Tournament Win

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School senior girls basketball team opened the season winning the Great Lakes Secondary School basketball tournament with an undefeated record.

The Hawks defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 41-22, followed by a lopsided win over Villanova 56-15.

CKSS capped off the tournament with a win in the finals over host Great Lakes 53-19.

Avia Stone, Jessica Jordan, and Mary Turner were CKSS’ leading scorers over the weekend.

High School Football Kicks Off This Week

The LKSSAA high school football season officially kicks off this week with six games on the schedule.

Wednesday, Wallaceburg will travel to play LCCVI in Petrolia at 3:45pm in Senior Varsity action.

In the 12-man football leagues, Thursday sees the CKSS Golden Hawks host the UCC Lancers for a 7:30pm game under the lights at CKSS.

John McGregor also hosts Blenheim Thursday for a 4:30pm kickoff in the 8-man league.

Finally, Friday sees the CKSS and UCC Junior squads go head-to-head at 3:45pm at CKSS.

Red Feather Week Wraps Up

It was a busy week of high school athletics across Chatham-Kent as Red Feather Week took place, with games and events benefitting the United Way.

Thursday night in front of a packed crowd, the CKSS Golden Hawks senior football team opened their season with a 24-6 win over the UCC Lancers.

Curtis Godfrey ran for 45-yards, including a rushing touchdown, and had 35 receiving yards, including a TD to lead the way for CKSS.

Reese Richmond had the other CKSS touchdown, while Braydon Turato kicked a 19-yard field goal.

Also in Senior football, Blenheim defeated JMSS 34-8.

Earlier this week, the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks captured the senior boys volleyball tournament title, and also won the annual softball tournament.

The LKCS Cardinals won the Red Feather dodgeball event.

Pegg Tops At Thrill On The Hill

Several Chatham-Kent athletes had strong performances at the annual Thrill On The Hill cross country meet held in Windsor Thursday, highlighted by Chatham-Kent Secondary School runner Emma Pegg winning the Midget girls division.

Pegg crossed the finish line in 16:51.8, 39 seconds ahead of the second place runner. Teammate Alyssa Robinson of CKSS was 5th with a time of 17:59.8.

In the Junior girls division, CKSS’ Anna Trinca was second with a time of 20:47.9, while UCC’s Brooke MacLeod followed closely in third at 20:54.8.

In Junior Boys Adrian Stubberfield of CKSS was the top local finisher, crossing in 9th place with a time of 17:39.2.

Payton Sabourin of CKSS was 8th in the senior girls division crossing in 25:03.6.

Finally in the Senior Boys race CKSS’ Cameron Ross was 5th (19:58.9) and Thador Teklhi, also of CKSS was 9th (20:51.7).

Hawks Continue Winning

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School senior girls basketball team has put up several wins in the past week, including a league win over UCC Thursday night, and a second place finish at the Seneca College Tournament in Toronto last weekend.

On Thursday at UCC, Jessica Jordan paced the Golden Hawks with 11-points as they edged UCC 34-31 in LKSSAA regular season action. Reagan Kellier added 8-points.

At the Seneca College Sting tournament in Toronto this past weekend, CKSS played well, falling in the final. On Friday, the Hawks started off defeating University Toronto School 49-15 and then went on to defeat St Theresa of Lisieux 64-24. On Saturday, in the semi-final game, they faced a strong team from Richview, and ended up winning 42-32. In the finals, they played Stephen Leacock, and fell short in the end by a score of 55-42. Game all-stars for the 4 games were named to Jessica Jordan, Mary Turner, Jade Barko, and Jessica Conrod. Jessica Jordan was also selected as a tournament all-star.

In other senior girls high school action Thursday, the Wallaceburg Tartans fell 49-39 to the Sarnia St. Patrick’s, John McGregor Panthers beat Lambton Central 36-34, Pain Court edged Blenheim 29-25, Lambton-Kent lost to Great Lakes 48-40, and Ridgetown defeated North Lambton 41-16.

Hawks Soar Over Wolfpack

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks defeated the Great Lakes Wolfpack 34-14 Thursday in senior football LKSSAA action

Curtis Godfrey caught for 170-yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Casey Reaume threw for 302-yards, and scored two touchdowns.

Also scoring for the Golden Hawks were Reece Richmond, who ran for 80-yards and a touchdown, and Evan Clarke, who returned a fumble 32-yards for a touchdown.

Jordan Wright had two interceptions for the CKSS Golden Hawks, while Chase Topic, Brenden Bondy, Jarrett Millard, and Xavier Hopkins lead the CKSS defense in tackles.

In other LKSSAA football action, the UCC Lancers Junior boys defeated Sarnia St. Patrick’s 28-7. Evan Torres threw three touchdown passes to Matt Hawryluk (2) and Cody Boulley (1). Torres was 10-for-15 for 197-yards. Tanner Hoorelbeck ran for a 5-yard touchdown.

The CKSS Junior boys also defeated Sarnia Northern 26-13.
