Chatham’s Trevor Everitt will continue his volleyball career next season at the post secondary level as he has committed to play OCAA volleyball for the St. Clair College Saints.

Everitt, a 6’5″ left side hitter, who has been a key component of many OFSAA Chatham-Kent Secondary School teams, said that St. Clair was the best fit for him both on and off the court.

“It feels good to finally commit with St.Clair,” said Everitt. “Over the last couple years I felt like St. Clair was the school for me. When practicing with the team over the summer the coaches and players were outstanding guys and the sports management program there was the best. Right then I knew that St.Clair was for me as I could get my degree but also play the game I love.”

According to Tim Leidl, Everitt’s Chatham-Kent Secondary School coach, St. Clair College is getting a quality player, and person, who will immediately help their program.

“Trevor is a versatile player as he has played left side, right side, and middle for the CK senior boys program,” Leidl described of the Chatham Ballhawks alumni. “Coaches dream of athletes like Trevor, who is willing to put the betterment of the team ahead of personal gains.”

Everitt has demonstrated his love for the game off the court as well, as he’s taken on a coaching role this year in the Ballhawks program, giving back the same support to other athletes he feels he’s received to this point.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this if it wasn’t for my parents supporting me over the years bringing me to morning practices, tournaments, and paying for the hotels, and teams, as they played a big role in my career,” Everitt said. “It was also my coaches, Paul Amato, Dale and Ingrid Lahey, Trevor Hay, Matt Welch, Justin Markovic, Greg Houston, Shawn Jackson, Dave Phoenix, Colin Roeszler, Kelvin Coates, Brandon Jenner, and Brian and Tim Leidl that helped me improve over the years to become the player I am.”

“Without the support from my family, friends and coaches none of this could be possible. Lastly, I would like to thank my teammates over the years for helping me improve as a player and teammate on and off the court. This has allowed me to feel that I can play at any level of volleyball.”

Everitt is also an accomplished badminton player at Chatham-Kent Secondary School. He will join the Saints, who feature another CKSS alumni, Jared Cobb, next season.

This season the St. Clair College Saints narrowly missed the OCAA playoffs due to a tiebreaker in their standings, finishing the year with a 9-9 record.

A trio of Chatham-Kent basketball players will be heading to St. Clair College in Windsor next season to suit up for the Saints in OCAA women’s basketball action.

Twins Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera, a pair of Chatham-Kent Secondary School students decided after weighing a number of options to attend St. Clair College.

The pair will be joined by 5’8″ shooting guard Jaimi Chauvin of Wallaceburg.

“She shoots the ball very well off of the dribble and can extend it past the 3 point line. Jaimi is a tough defender, who rebounds the ball well at both ends of the court,” said Wallaceburg Tartans head coach Janine Day of Chauvin. “Jaimi is an excellent teammate who leads by example both on and off of the court.”

Day has also coached the Kucera twins in the past, and believes they’ll bring a lot of skill to the St. Clair Saints’ roster.

“She is an athletic presence on both the offensive and defensive end of the court,” Day said of Logan Kucera. “Logan attacks well off of the dribble and can pull up from mid range. Logan can be used to guard the opposing teams top guard. Logan’s work ethic at practices is a key to her success.”

“She is able to control the game for her team as the primary ball handler,” added Day of Jana Kucera. “Jana shoots the ball very well from 3 point range and is able to get to the paint in a half court setting. Jana’s skill and athleticism make her valuable in all aspects of the game.”

For the Kucera’s, who will study Fitness and Health Promotion, they chose St. Clair College for a variety of reasons.

“We love sports and being physically active so we wanted to select a program that would allow us to study what we are already interested in,” the duo said. Eventually, we would love to work with special populations, keeping them active and fit. St. Clair’s Fitness and Health Promotion program is the perfect place for us to start. We are familiar with the campus and feel lucky to be playing in one of the newest gyms in the province. The coaches and the St. Clair players made us feel like a part of the athletic family since we first met with them.”

Staying and playing together for Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera was also an important factor in their school decision.

We have been teammates our entire lives – it would be strange for us to go in different directions,” they said. “Our game is stronger when we play together and we cannot wait to see what it is like to play together at the next level.”

The St. Clair Saints basketball team in recent seasons has been powered by another local product, Wallaceburg’s Torrie Handsor, who helped her team to a 12-6-0 record last season.

Chatham’s Tess Scaman has made an NCAA commitment to play college golf next season for Post University.

Scaman, a Chatham-Kent Secondary School student, competed this season both at the high school level, and also on the Jamieson Junior Golf Tour. Scaman finished in the Top 10 in each of her 13 tournaments this summer. For her, the choice of Post University came for a variety of reasons.

“A couple reasons why I chose Post are because of the atmosphere I saw when i visited, how small the school is – more 1 on 1 learning, similar to high school class sizes, not overwhelmingly large – I really connected with the coach Steve Sokol and teammates that I met,” explained Scaman. “I felt like it would be the right fit for me and will provide me with lots of new and exciting experiences for the next 4 years.”

An accomplished volleyball and badminton player as well, Scaman will begin competing with the NCAA Division II school next season, and will also study Business Administration at Post University. She has competed for the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks, and Chatham Ballhawks outside of school.

“I am equally extremely excited and nervous knowing the level I’ll be playing at but I’m going in with a very open mind as to what I can achieve and I think I will learn a lot from being able to play a post-secondary sport.”

Post University is located in Waterbury, Connecticut.
