Pierce Johnson - Windsor Lancers

Chatham’s Pierce Johnson has committed to join the University of Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball program next season.

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School senior had an official signing Monday at CKSS with his coaches, family, and Windsor head coach Hames Gravelle.

“I am really excited to begin my OUA volleyball career with the Windsor Lancers next fall,” said Johnson, who has helped the CKSS volleyball program to multiple SWOSSAA and OFSAA appearances.

For Johnson, a six-foot-five left side hitter, who is currently a member of the LVC Fire 18U, Windsor was an easy choice.

“It was an easy decision picking Windsor because of how great the guys on the team are and also because it was a great fit academically, but I would have to say the number one reason I chose Windsor was because of the head coach James Gravelle,” explained Johnson.

“After talking with him and practicing with the team a few times, I knew that he was going to be the guy that will get me where I want to go in volleyball, and help me find my full potential as a player and as a student. It is going to be very exciting next year since we are going to have a younger team to see what we are capable of accomplishing.”

An alumni of the Chatham Ballhawks and silver medallist at the 2014 Ontario Winter Games, Johnson is a multi-sport athlete who has also excelled at sports such as basketball, badminton, and track and field at CKSS, along with his dominance on the volleyball court.

Of course, Johnson understands it took the support of his family, and coaches, including Tim Leidl and Brian Leidl, his CKSS coaches who were on hand at the signing, for him to reach his goal of competing at the University level.

“I wouldn’t of been able to have the success I have in volleyball without the help on the court from my coaches Tim and Brian Leidl, and obviously the help and support off the court from my parents.”

The Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team currently sit with a 10-16-1 record overall this season.

CKSS girls volleyball

The CKSS girls volleyball team celebrates after winning a point during the 2016 LKSSAA volleyball final – Contributed Photo

The game of volleyball was invented in 1895, just four years after basketball (1891) but was not played in local high schools until the 1950s because most gyms up to that time were too small. After WWII several new gyms were built, notably in Merlin, Blenheim and Wallaceburg which permitted the playing of volleyball.

The first Kent County volleyball championship was won by the Wallaceburg senior boys’ team in 1955-56. For the next sixteen consecutive years the senior Tartans won the Kent County title.

The first OFSAA senior boys’ volleyball championship was held in 1956-57. It was not until 1974-75 that girls could participate at OFSAA. Coach Clare Maltby’s senior boys’ team (WDSS) of 1964-65 were the first Kent County school team to win an OFSAA gold medal in any sport.

The CKSS Golden Hawks have won fifteen (ten boys and five girls) OFSAA gold medals in volleyball, more than any other school in the province. The school in second place is West Elgin S.S. (with twelve) which was a member of KCSSAA from 1952 to 1967.

Individuals who played volleyball in the 1960s and 1970s might not recognize the game today.

Players can no longer block the serve. Serves may touch the net. Double hits on the first hit are not illegal. Scoring is by ‘rally point’ meaning one point is scored each rally. In the past a team had to be serving to score. Finally, in 1998, the libero was added. He/she is a player that wears a different coloured shirt who cannot serve, block or attack.

Coaches Jim Smyth and Randy Bartlett are the only local coaches to have led both a boys’ team and a girls’ team to OFSAA gold.

The above selections is an excerpt from local sports historian Larry Lahey’s book, ‘The History of Kent County High School Sports’, which is available at two locations in Chatham, Lenover Quality Meats on Park Ave. East, and the Instant Print Shoppe on Richmond Street.

Chatham’s Kirsten Horney will take the next step in her hockey career, as the 2001 born defender has signed with the PWHL’s Southwest Wildcats.

Horney spent last season playing for the Chatham Outlaws Bantam ‘AA’ team, and also skated for the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks.

For her, making the step to Southwest, and into Ontario’s premiere women’s Junior hockey loop was a simple one.

“I chose to play for the Southwest Wildcats this season because I want to play the highest level of women’s hockey available to me. I also feel the coaching staff there is very experienced and can help me reach my goals,” said Horney.

And those goals, says the puck moving defender, include playing hockey after her high school education is done at the power secondary level.

“I would like to have the opportunity to play post secondary hockey at the University or College level,” explained Horney. “Making the jump to junior hockey at this time will give me that opportunity.”

Southwest also features another Chatham product, Taylor Lockwood, who also attends CKSS.
